Cookies

There are many things I love about the holidays.  Near the top of the list is the different varieties of cookies that are baked up.  See, I love cookies.  Whatever kind you got, I’ll have.  Sugar, Ginger, Peanutbutter, Pumpkin I do not discriminate.  I’m like the United Nations of cookie eating.  Of course, like any man I do have my favorites.  Here are my top-five.

#5) Rum Balls.  Technically this may not be a cookie, but I put it in the category.  What genius to combine rum (yummmmy) and dough.  Plus, you can have them at work and no one would think anything of it.  Uhhhh, not that I have.

#4) Crack Balls.  Okay, I don’t know if that is the technical name, but that is the adoptive name we have given them here at the Peacock.  Our assignment editor and mad-baker extraordinaire Manda makes these and like the name, they are quite addicting.  This year I only had one, and within a matter of minutes I was going through withdrawal.

#3) Gingerbread Men.  I know I know, typical.  Hey, I am a traditionalist at heart.  I like my Christmases to by classical.  SO I pick a classic dessert.  Plus my wife makes a mean gingerbread man(woman).  Also. who doesn’t love dressing little cookie people?

#2) Sugar Cookies.  There is just something simply fantastic about this cookie.  Something so basic yet so complex.  It doesn’t try to hide what it is.  All cookies have sugar but hide it with fancy names.  This is just in your face.  I am sugar!  Come eat me!!!  How can I possibly ignore that.  It was made to be consumed, I’m simply fulfilling its’ life’s mission.

#1) Seven Layer Bars.  This is a family staple. Goes along with my brother sneaking downstairs to go through his stocking at 3 in the morn (BTW, he’s 26) just wouldn’t be Christmas w/o it.  The aroma that wafts from the oven when these little heavenly bars are baking is an instant upper.  My mouth is watering right now just thinking about it.  (Does saliva affect how a keyboard works??)  The Christmas season hasn’t officially started till these make an appearance.

Now, these are just my top-five.  There are much more that I love but this quintet is special in many ways.
