Humpday Convo: My Longest Road Trip

Sunrise over the Grand Canyon

What a fun trip it was. I drove cross country the summer before my senior year in High School. Along the way we stopped in French Lick, IN. For those of you who do not know, it is the hometown of Basketball Jesus, AKA Larry Joe Bird. It was almost two hours out of our way but what a fun detour. Just to walk the same streets as he did was worht it.

We then stopped off for a few days in the St. Louis area for a family reunion then I joined up for my Uncle and we finished the trip to LA. We were able to cover that distance from St. Louis to Los Angeles in three days. In Kansas we stopped at this hol-in-the-wall BBQ place off the highway. From the looks of it, it was a shithole but what they served inside was pure heaven. The best ribs and brisket I have ever had. My mouth is watering right now thinking of it and it has been 17 years. We spent the night in Colorado Springs. Drove around the Air Force Acadamy campus. Waht a great college atmosphere. From there we drove south into New Mexico and Arizona. We had lunch in Taos. Had great mexican food and walked around some of the markets then we headed west to the Grand Canyon. We got there really late and had no hotel room. Instead we slept at the park in our car. The next morning we woke up to the sunrise coming up over the rim. Breathtaking does not begin to describe it. SInce we got there so late, it was pitch black. We had no idea that we aere parked not more than 20 feet from the rim. We found ourselves alone just watching the show that morning. I don't think either one of us said anything. It is a vision I will always have.

From there, it wa a straight shoot to LA. Spending three weeks in that city was a whole other experience but one that pales in comaprison to the trip cross-country. SOmething I most definitly want to do again.
